Sentence


Sentence is a group of words that makes a complete sentence. Single word denotes different meaning but when all the words are joined then they make a complete sense and convey the thoughts of a person.


In our daily conversation and writings we use sentences to convey something to the listener or reader. In other words, sentence is a combination of words that makes complete sense and it contains a main idea.

For example:

  • He is my best friend.
  • I am going to California next week.
  • I love to play football.

    • Types of Sentences:

    There are basically three types of sentences.

    1. Simple Sentence
    2. Compound Sentence
    3. Complex Sentence

    Kinds of Sentences:

    There are five kinds of sentences.

    1. Declarative or Assertive Sentence
    2. Interrogative Sentence
    3. Imperative Sentence
    4. Exclamatory Sentence
    5. Optative Sentence

    Simple Sentence

    Simple sentence is that type of sentence that conveys a single thought, and it consists of only one clause. It has one main idea, one clause and it has one subject and one predicate or only one finite verb. See the examples below for better understanding:

  • They live in California.
  • He is fond of football.
  • We will go fishing.
  • Honesty is the best policy.
  • He is my best friend.

    • Compound Sentence

    Compound sentence is a type of sentence that conveys more than one thoughts and consists of two or more co-ordinates clauses. It has two or more main ideas or two or more independent or main clauses.

    For Example:

  • A horse gallops and a tortoise crawls.
  • Barney took tea but I preferred a cold drink.
  • Girls like to sing but the boys like to dance.
  • We will go to market and then to restaurant for dinner.
  • We waited for long and at last she came.
  • The armies fought bravely but neither could defeat the other.

    • Complex Sentence

    Complex sentence is the type of a sentence that consists of one main clause and one or more subordinate clauses. It has one main idea and one or more dependent ideas or it has one main clause or one or more dependent clauses. See the examples below:

    For Example:

  • They climbed the mountain whose height they did not know.
  • The plane made an emergency landing successfully which we could never expect.
  • When he saw me, he ran away.
  • Since the people were innocent, they chose him their President which was a miserable thing.

    • Declarative Sentence

    Declarative sentence is a sentence that makes a statement. It is also knows as assertive sentence. A declarative sentence is divided into two types:

    a. Affirmative or Positive Sentence:

    It is a sentence that gives a positive statement. For example:

  • Sybil is a teacher.
  • I live in California
  • He goes to college every day.
  • We shall go to New York tomorrow.

    • b. Negative Sentence:

    It is a sentence that gives a negative statement. For example:

  • Sybil is not a teacher.
  • I do not live in California.
  • He does not go to college every day.
  • We shall not go to New York tomorrow.

    • Interrogative Sentence

    Interrogative sentence is a sentence that asks a question. For example:

  • Is Sybil a teacher?
  • Do you live in California?
  • Does he go to college every day?
  • Shall we go to New York tomorrow?

    • Imperative Sentence

    Imperative sentence is a sentence that expresses an order, request or advise. For example:

  • Get out of the room.
  • Please lend me some money.
  • Always trust in God.
  • Do not waste your time.

    • Exclamatory Sentence

    Exclamatory sentence is a sentence that expresses a strong or sudden feelings. For example:

  • Hurrah! We have won the match.
  • Alas! My brother has failed.
  • What a pleasant weather it is!
  • How high the wall is!

    • Optative Sentence

    Optative sentence is a sentence that expresses some wish. For example:

  • May you live long!
  • May God bless you with a son!
  • Would that he were alive today!
  • Would that we had learnt Spanish in childhood!
